Come see young artists shine at the Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition Saturday, January 13th in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall.

The Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artist Competition is hosted by the Monroe Symphony League as a fundraiser for the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, as well as a chance to seek out local young talent from the surrounding area. The competition has been running for nearly 40 years.

Haitian Composer Featured At ULM Concert And Lecture

The University of Louisiana Monroe's Visual and Performing Arts program is hosting its lecture and concert for the Spring 2017 Composer- in - Residence this Tuesday, February 21st. The lecture will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Biedenharn Recital Hall. The concert will also be held in the Recital Hall from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Sydney Guillaume, the composer - in - residence for this semester, currently lives in Portland, Oregan, but is originally from the country of Haiti. His lecture will focus on the Haitian influences that are found his musical compositions.

The term "new classical music" may sound like an oxymoron to some people, but composers are constantly publishing and pushing the limits of sound. The New Music on the Bayou Festival celebrates this world of cutting edge music.

"I think that a a lot of people don't even know what new classical music sounds like. They think of classical music, and they think of Beethoven. They think of new music, and they think of country or jazz, or rock -- and this is really none of those things," explains Festival co-founder and University of Louisiana Monroe professor Mel Mobley.

Implosion Percussion Performs at ULM and Tech

With a mix of styles and talents, the Implosion Percussion Group is an group of 5 professional percussionist led by Dr. Mel Mobley. The group performs shows Louisiana Tech University Tuesday, April 5, and the University of Louisiana Monroe Thursday, April 7. Both events begin at 7:30 p.m.

Mobley is an associate professor of music at ULM, and says the group grew out of a need to help graduating student expand their horizons a little further. 

ULM Concert Highlights Regional Composers

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Music Department gives regional composers a chance showcase and premier their works tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall. ULM Composition Professor Mel Mobley says this will be a joint composition recital featuring his works and two pieces by acclaimed composer Kyle Gullings from Tyler, Texas.

Gullings has received many awards for his compositions including the prestigious National Opera Association’s “Chamber Opera Composition Competition.” He also participated in the Kennedy Center’s “Page to Stage Festival.”

Contestants from across Louisiana are competing this weekend in the 2016 Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition, for a chance to perform with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra during its next season. 

It's an annual event established by the Monroe Symphony League and the Monroe Symphony Orchestra to promote and encourage excellence in musical performance.
